Glitches with the Diesel Engine |
| Considering the advantages offered by the diesel engine, one may still wonder why the sale of such product has always been lackluster, with the exception of the 1970s when diesel engine enjoyed profitability because of the OPEC oil embargo.
In this article we examine eight probable reasons the diesel engine never really enjoyed immense profitability:
1. Diesel has a higher compression ratio compared to gas, thus making diesel the heavier engine.
2. Compared to gas engine and gas-powered vehicles, diesel vehicles and engines are much more expensive.
3. Diesel engines accelerate slower compared to gas engines. Diesel engine is primarily built for torque rather for horsepower because of its weight and compression ratio.
4. Diesel engines had to be fuel injected, which was inefficient and expensive in the past.
5. A diesel engine produces more smoke and it smells funny compared to gasoline engine.
6. A diesel engine has difficulty in starting up during cold weather because of its glow plug part, which needs heating upon start up.
7. Diesel engines are noisy compared to gas engine, which only vibrates.
8. Gas fuel is more available than diesel fuel.
These characteristics of the diesel engine can be really a big turn-off especially for drivers who are very particular about engine performance. However, as with any technology in its initial stages, we can expect that these inefficiencies of the diesel engine can be amended in the near future. By doing so, there is a possibility that we can see more more production of vehicles with diesel engines.
